This sign was, for real, posted on the highway. Love the sense of humor!
Along the Turquoise Trail are little towns. I mean LITTLE towns. Original buildings, dirt streets. One, Madrid, I think, has several quirky boutiques & artisan shops. We passed through & just looked, but we stopped in Cerrillos.
Some scenes from "Young Guns" were shot here.
This is the Cerrillos Trading Post.
It was literally stuffed with antiques & oddities from the old days. I find that more interesting than gallery or boutique shopping anymore, so I'm glad we spent our short allotted time here instead of Madrid.
You MUST read this!!
Rusty mining or farming equipment outside.
Beautiful southwest doors.
The black & turquoise door is in Santa Fe.
This one is the entrance to the Cathedral in Santa Fe.
Our day trip was not meant to be an intensive sight seeing tour. We just wanted to see the countryside, the towns, and a couple highlights in Santa Fe.
First stop was the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi. (It was close to the parking spot we found).
One of Santa Fe's "must see" sites is Loretto Chapel, home of the miracle spiral staircase. You can read the legendary story here.
In the courtyard entrance is a small tree where people hang rosaries.
We've been to Santa Fe once before, many years ago. It's spread out even more and on this Sunday was really packed. I think many people from the Balloon Fiesta had the same idea we did. But I saw what I wanted to see. We headed back to Abq. for the night and the next morning it was off on our next adventure. Check back to see another amazing spot in New Mexico!
