The Cincinnati Chronicles - volume 1

I haven't blogged in such a long time! I've wanted to, but I kind of overwhelm myself trying to choose pictures to post. And then I think I have nothing to say. Well, I just returned from a short trip to Cincinnati. I posted a few images to Instagram, but honestly, IG doesn't really do pictures justice. All that to say, I'm baaack!

I call this one, "Not the Upside Down" for all the "Stranger Things" fans out there! This picture cost me $12, by the way. I wanted to get some unencumbered bridge shots and the closest parking we found was at the riverwalk. And wouldn't you know it, a storm quickly thundered up and we had to hightail it back to the car after only 10-15 minutes. We just made it, too, seconds before it down poured!

Cincinnati is home to The Reds (baseball) and Bengals (who, in case you don't know, went to the Super Bowl this year!)

This view is from the Eden Park Overlook near Mt. Adams. Beautiful park and Mt Adams is a charming, quaint community. One of several in Cinci. We rode that river boat earlier in the day. More on that later.

I liked the composition of all the red brick buildings. The city has some incredible architecture, a mix of old & historic and new & modern.

This is the tallest building, Great American Tower at Queen City Square. It was completed in 2011 and is 41 stories, topped by its signature tiara.

Next up - my city grunge collection.

The Cincinnati Chronicles - Urban Grunge

I love photos with grungy texture. We were exploring a neighborhood that was well known to our hosts and so we felt safe spending a few minutes in this alley.

This part of the alley actually appears in a music video our hosts made.

I'm a big fan of Stranger Things (the Netflix show). The dead vines on these walls reminded me of the Upside Down. A few Lightroom effects and voila! my urban grungies take on a more sinister look.

I did a few portrait shots in some alley doorways that turned out really good, but I won't post them here.

Next up - the bridge collection.

The Cincinnati Chronicles - Bridges

Cincinnati has a lot of bridges! And I was out to get a great bridge shot for my office. I don't think I succeeded, but here they are.

Next up - art, boats & a very impressive storm.

The Cincinnati Chronicles - Art, Boats & a Very Impressive Storm

We paid a quick visit to the Cincinnati Museum of Art, greeted by a very large sculpture of Pinnochio.

The building itself is a work of art, with a grand double staircase and beautiful exhibit rooms. According to their website, it's one of the oldest institutions in the country, opening in 1886, and housing some 67,000 pieces of art.

There are hundreds of classical paintings, sculptures, etc. but this is Cincinnati and Pete Rose is still an important part of its history.

The tomb effigy of Elizabeth, wife of painter Frank Duveneck.

Steampunk style (one of my favorites) glasses and art deco lamps.

A pair of angels stand guard at the entrance to one of the exhibit rooms.

Art of a different kind and in a different place - Kiss Gene Simmons stage outfit on display at the Hard Rock Casino. We had a late supper there the evening we arrived because it was close to our hotel. It was fun seeing costumes on display that belonged to Lady Gaga, Barbra Streisand, members of Kiss, and several others, plus Eddie Van Halen's Porsche.

I always say, "art is everywhere, in everything!"

Probably everyone's favorite activity was the riverboat ride on the Ohio River. Fifteen minutes before launch, we were standing outside on the deck. The breeze cooled and felt so wonderful after the high temps. Then my husband noticed clouds gathering down-river. Pretty soon they were clumping together and getting dark. Then things got exciting.

I'm taking pictures and he says we better get inside quickly. We barely made it in (sound familiar?) and a gust of wind whammed past, even blowing a chair downstairs. The wind and rain looked like a small hurricane whipping the trees on the shoreline next to the boat. My biggest concern was that we wouldn't be able to launch and couldn't reschedule because we were leaving the next day (these cruises aren't cheap!) But it whizzed on by and fifteen minutes later, we launched right on time. Unfortunately, as it gathered power on land, it became an F2 tornado and did some damage in a little town northeast of the city.

We all enjoyed the river cruise very much. It's a great way to relax while seeing the city and hearing its history. But there was more excitement to come. The storm knocked power out for 10,000 people, including our hotel and many area restaurants. We eventually found one in the suburbs and by the time we got back to the hotel (and walked 5 flights of stairs to our room) we were only without power for 30 minutes. And I was thanking the Lord and my husband/coach for encouraging me to keep up our garage gym workouts!

Next up - a castle in the city.

The Cincinnati Chronicles - Castles & Other Urban Architecture

Our hosts love city life. This park is right in front of their apartment. The arches are lit at night. There's an old church at the end of the street. The city library and a grocery store are within walking distance.

There were so many wonderful building murals and this is the only one I managed to get a picture of.

Near our hotel was a small replica of a castle. It's actually called Elsinore Arch.

It's such an odd sight in the midst of modern buildings. It was near our hotel and during some down time, we ventured out to, of course, get a picture.

The backstory - according to Google - in 1883 Cincinnati Water Works needed to build a new valve house in this spot and decided the structure should be deserving of the existing park's beauty. A Shakespearean Festival was taking place at Music Hall and Hamlet was being performed. The backdrop was a painted image of Elsinore Castle in Denmark. Someone saw it and the idea for a valve house castle was born.

I tried some atmospheric effects to make it look old and mysterious.

We're not sure where these steps lead. My husband went as far as the turn and said they keep going. We assumed they lead to Eden Park.

Wrapping up with a scene from Eden Park. In my next post, I'll show some views from the road.
